AUTO REPAIR & MAINTENANCE BLOG

Maintaining your vehicle at home is a satisfying way to keep your motoring costs down. With the right knowledge and products even someone who isn't very mechanically inclined can take care of many of the smaller issues in everyday driving. Sometimes, however, car issues can be too specialized or complex for the average motorist to take care of by themselves and it becomes time to take your car to the pros. Below you'll find three major warning signs that you need to get to a mechanic ASAP, as well as some of the potential causes behind them.

Engine and Drivetrain Problems

Let's start at the beginning. If your car won't even turn over and start up, then the rest of the problems on this list won't come into play. The simplest cause of this issue is a dead battery, which you can remedy with jumper cables, and the instructions that come printed on their packaging. If jumping the car doesn't work, you may have a larger problem with your ignition system. It's advisable to take your car into the shop at this point because finding the root of the problem will likely involve removing a few parts from your engine. Whether it's dead spark plugs or electrical problems, it's better to have it dealt with by a professional. Likewise, engine surging where the revs rise and fall can mean a problem with your fuel injectors, which are fairly deep within your motor. It's unwise to drive around with a surging engine, as this burns more gas and can cause unintended acceleration. Drivetrain issues are another major issue requiring professional attention. Everybody fears the dreaded transmission repairs, so if certain gears won't engage or they shift at the wrong times you should definitely take your car to the qualified mechanics here at Saint's Automotive Service Center.

Vibration While Driving

This issue can be caused by damaged drivetrain components, but can also stem from misaligned wheels or unbalanced or flat tires. If you feel any vibration or shuddering as you drive along, you should get to a mechanic as soon as you can. At its worst, this issue can lessen your control over the car, potentially causing accidents. This will also wear out your tires more quickly than if everything was straight and true. Unwanted vibrations put stress on important (and costly) components like suspension and brakes while decreasing gas mileage, so it's smart to take your car in as soon as these issues develop.

Poor Braking Performance

Your brakes are vital to keeping you safe on the road and should definitely be cared for by a professional, unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing. Common signs of issues with your car's braking system include squeaking or squealing when the brakes are applied, or the brakes feeling spongy and failing to slow your vehicle properly. Squealing brakes are caused by the brake pads wearing through the pad surface to the metal underneath. At this point the metal behind your brake pad is coming into contact with the brake rotor. This can be disastrous and produce unwanted heat, reduced stopping power, and cause you to have to buy new rotors as well as the relatively cheap pads. Spongey and weak brakes can mean there's a problem with your master cylinder, which converts the mechanical pressure of you pressing the pedal into hydraulic pressure to apply the brakes. In either case, it's best to have your brakes seen to by the professional mechanics here at Saint's Automotive Service Center.

There are instances where car maintenance is simple and easy, but if you notice any of these issues developing, it's best to take your car in for a qualified mechanic's checkup so the problems can be remedied before they turn into much more serious issues. Saint's Automotive Service Center has the tools and expertise to have you safely back on the road in no time at all.

  • I called about coming to my home to fix a flat tire. They were "Johnny on the Spot!" Being a widow, it's nice to know there are people who care. Thank you so very much!! I'm so appreciative!
    -BJ L.

  • Craig has helped me several times, not just at Saint's. He goes above and beyond to make sure you get the right repair. I live and die by my truck and I gladly bring it here for repair and tires. I've never once been mislead and the tires I bought from here a few days ago managed to get my little Chevy 45 miles with a 3000 pound load, no sweat. I have the pictures! I know Craig has personally worked to make sure my truck is in peak condition to handle what I do. Definitely come here. The price is less than the dealership and the crew actually cares and does their job right and well.

  • Saint's Auto does an amazing job. My Acura has had countless issues and they have all been figured out and repaired for good prices. Will continue taking car to Saint's for as long as I own it. Very friendly there and they don't try to screw you over like other places!

  • I've been going to Saint's for over 10+ years, I had an Acura sports car, and currently have an Acura MDX. They have done a wonderful job of maintaining both over the years. Craig does an excellent job working the front desk and giving accurate quotes for the jobs I've had done. Dave the owner, is very knowledgeable, in dealing with some of the issues I have had over the years. One example was when my brake lines rusted out in my sports car (thanks to salt in MN), and another time was when my bluetooth was causing my battery to drain and would not start, after being parked at the airport for a week. These guys do a wonderful job of mainting my behicles, I have even had them give me quotes on working with my Chevrolet Silverado. Just need to have the down time to get the work done.
    -Bill B.

  • I just wanted to thank you for many years of great service. I've always felt confident with your accurate assessments of any issues with my car. I also appreciate your fair pricing and that you never have tried selling me service or parts I don't need.
    -Shirley C.

  • Exceptional quality and service. I drive from the twin cities to Princeton because of Dave's trustworthiness, honesty, reasonable prices, and quality of work. Highly recommend.
    -Zach S.

  • Saint's Automotive helped get my vehicle ready for a long drive to the west coast for a vacation. It was a great relief to know that everything was looked at and fixed so we could enjoy our vacation and lower our changes of breaking down along the way. They truly take pride in their work and their customer service is great!

  • I have been going here for years and have always been treated fairly. I moved to Plymouth and I still drive there any time my car needs anything! Dave is always extremely fair, caring, and very knowledgeable! I've never had any problems with this place and I wouldn't go anywhere else. I highly recommend it!
    -Kenzie M.

    -Mike E.

  • I just want to say thank you for taking such good care of my car over the past 20 some years. You are probably the most honest and trustworthy auto repair shop in Minnesota. One of my only regrets about moving to Michigan is that you are not moving too.

I wish you much success and happiness in the years ahead.
    -Sandi G.

  • Very friendly and knowledgeable. Best place for my imports.
    -Connor B.

  • Saints Auto is a top quality service center. It is not always easy for me to walk into a service shop and feel comfortable, as I don't know much about vehicles. At Saints they put you at ease. They are very friendly and honest. They go above and beyond the call of duty. Recently I had my car serviced, just routine maintenance. Oil change, courtesy inspection. I had a musty smell in my vents, they totally resolved the issue. I feel when I leave there that my car is in top running condition. They are professional yet treat you like a friend. Thank you! Thank you Dave and Jeff!!
    -Teresa P.

  • Dave is the best! If you want an HONEST and fair guy that'll give you the real problem, and tell you what needs to be done right away and what can wait a little, this is where you want to be. I don't feel like I have to check anything out with my "motor head" friends because Dave is always honest with his customers.
